Living like a turning compass

Listening to stories widens the imagination; telling them lets us leap over cultural walls, embrace different experiences, feel what others feel. In this talk Elif Shafak builds on this simple idea to argue that fiction can overcome identity politics.  But it’s that simple essence of storytelling and the simplicity with which she can tell her story to millions, across the world, and how easily it can be appreciated and extended via the internet that resonates.  Nobody need be a novelist to fling thier story across walls these days.  But we should all still aspire to be one.

Come let us be friends, for once

Let us make life easy on us

Let us be lovers and loved ones

The earth shall be left to no-one
